About Us

D & J Stead was formed by Duncan and Jane Stead. In 1983 We bought Claremont House with 4 acres of land. Starting with a few suckler cows and gradually buying pieces of machinery to carry out small contracting jobs. We often bought machinery that needed repairs. And made 1 good machine out of 2.

In 1989 we bought a Volac round bale wrapper and a new John Deere 550 baler which we then moved into the making of silage and haylage in round bales. We have always prided ourselves on giving a reliable and professional service. In 2009 our son Nick came into the business and we carried on expanding our business.

Our business today consists of round baling, square baling, muck spreading, saw blade hedge cutting and land drain jetting along with various supporting services. We also have 300 acres of land we farm ourselves which we grow grass (ryegrass + meadow) wheat barley and beans. The grass we grow usually goes to the equine market along with our straw. We also buy straw in the swath from local farmers to bale.

In 2023 we were informed by our local hydraulics supplier (Yorkshire Hydraulics Ltd) who we have used ourselves regularly for many years were going to retire. After much thought we negotiated to buy their stock and machinery from them and run it alongside our Farm Contracting.
